Water conservation is not a passing fad; it's not just a subject to be discussed only during a "dry year". The Chattahoochee River serves 3.5 million Georgian's and 70% of metro Atlanta. Yet the area of our watershed north of Atlanta is the smallest to serve any metropolitan area in the country. In addition to exploring the pages in this section of our website to find water savings tips, please check out our program, Tapped Out: The Drying Up of Atlanta, to learn about the underlying causes of and solutions to metro Atlanta's ongoing water crisis.

Metro Atlanta is expected to grow by at least one million in the next decade, but we are lagging far behind the rest of the country in terms of water efficiecy. According to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, Georgia residents use 10 percent more water per capita than the national average (168 gallons per day vs. 153 gallons per day). Other major cities have decreased water consumption while poplutation has grown - we can do it too!

Using water wisely year-round-in wet years and dry years-makes common sense. Efficiency is the most cost-effective and environmentally sound way to control the demands on our rivers, streams and lakes (EPA). You can be a part of these sustainable solutions!
