River Discovery Series
All together the five consecutive trips covered 37 miles of the river within the CRNRA, from Bowman’s Island to Paces Mill. For each segment, a National Park Service (NPS) guide acquainted paddlers with the key features of that part of the river.
Although any one segment can be traveled separately, the series was designed as a whole. The registration fee for individual segments was $35 per boat, with space is limited to 30 people per trip..
Segment 1: Buford Dam to Settles Bridge
Completed on Saturday, June 21, 2008 – 5 Miles
This trip started at the base of Buford Dam in the clear, cold water released from the bottom of Lake Lanier and ran to the Historic Settles Bridge, follwing a section of beautiful oak hickory forest and prime trout water - an excellent opportunity to see wildlife.
Segment 2: Settles Bridge to Abbotts Bridge
Completed on Saturday, July 12, 2008 – 8 Miles
Putting-in at the historic Settles Bridge, paddlers learned of earlier times and how humans interacted with the river in ages past. Take out was just downstream from Abbotts Bridge.
Segment 3: Abbotts Bridge to Jones Bridge
Completed on Saturday, August 2, 2008 – 7 Miles
This trip started at the NPS boat ramp just below Abbotts Bridge, took paddlers through the section most popular for boat fishermen due to slower currents, and ended at the Jones Bridge boat ramp.
Segment 4: Jones Bridge to Island Ford and the Historic Hewlett Lodge
Completed Saturday, August 9, 2008 – 8 Miles
This journey included one of the most scenic sections in the National Recreation Area -t an easy paddle with few riffles.
Segment 5: Morgan Falls Dam to Paces Mill
Completed on Saturday, August 23, 2008 - 9 miles
The final section of the CRNRA is rich in both natural and human history. Paddlers passed through Cochran Shoals, Devil’s Race Course Shoals, and Thornton Shoals, all easy class 1.5 rapids.
